In Thailand medical support in organized well by the government. Even in a little village like Phato there is a well equipped hospital that can offer very good basic health care almost free of costs. Therefor the children under the medical support program of the Thai Child Development Foundation are exceptions.
For children who need special medical support these hospitals cannot always supply.
The Medical support project of the Thai Child Development Foundation can vary from logistic support like transportation to and from a hospital or the physiotherapist, extra nursing care at home, donation of needed material, supply in rare medicine, visits to specialist in Bangkok, financial support for an operation, etc.
Depending on the need of the child this can be an one time action or a long term support project. Especially handicapped children who live in the countryside need extra help as there is very little for them outside the big cities.
Practically that means that parents take their handicapped babies in a carrying cloth to the field so they can be with them all day, even during work. However comforting this is, it also deprives these children off their chance to strengthen their muscles. If they survive and grow older and to heavy to carry, this often means that they lie alone in the house waiting for their parents to come home from work.
For these children weekly transportation to the nearest physiotherapist is organized, training's for their caretakers are being organized, visits to linguist or other specialists, material such as wheelchairs are donated, etc.
