“Sawasdee krab!

My name is Nong Priam. I live in Pangwan with my father, mother, 2 sisters and my brother. I was born on March 7, 2000.

My parents have a smal shop, but I'm not alowed to work there, because I give away candy to my friends.

I'm a student of TCDF's Special School since 2011. Pee Air is my favorite teacher in School.

About Nong Priam

Nong Priam has a full scholarship with TCDF thanks to Join!forkids.

Nong Priam is a happy, naughty boy with Down Syndrome. He is a student of the Special School of TCDF since 2011. Before he started as a student at the Special School he never went to school.

In 2013 TCDF started a program on occupational training for the students. Together with their parents and the local community, TCDF helps them to start a project which allows the family to generate more income to secure the future for special children who will probable stay wih their parents their whole life.

Nong Priam and his family will start a recycle project (collecting and sales). At the Special School he will be trained on this subject one day a week by one of the teachers.

TCDF aims for each student of the Special School to be trained on:

  • Educational development: reading and writing
  • Emotional development: work and learn within a team, drama, care for others, caring for animals, personal mentoring, involvement of family members, correct social behaviour and so on.
  • Physical development :physiotherapy, swimming, horse back riding, team sport, games and so on.
  • Daily life skills: independent on daily activities, like: personal hygiene, reading, writing, computer use, independent living, orientation, finding your way around outside the safe environment of home, biking, telephone conversations, and so on.
  • Occupational training: future trainin on work on the TCDF farm (vegetable gardens, mushroomfarm, fish and chicken, horses), in our restaurant, calculating, handling money, budget, saving and so on.

The educational plans are developped on a personal level for each student.

For Nong Priam this means a focus on:

  • Social correct behaviour. Learn how to interact with other students, teachers, learn to greet and to be polite and move with care.
  • Reading and writing. Because Priam never went to school before, he never learned how to read or write.
  • Concentration. Priam is easily distracted and cannot focus for a long time.
  • Skills on movement; gentle.
  • Speaking and pronounciation. Priam cannot speak or articulate proper.
  • His diet and eating habits
  • Care for others: Nong Priam helps the teachers in the breaks and lunchtime. He is sweet and very caring for the younger students.
  • Art: together with his fellow students Nong Priam makes beautiful postcards, prints T-shirts and makes decorations during the creative lessons. The products are sold in the shop of the TCDF Eco-Logic, the main sponsor of TCDF. A part of the profit will be donated to Priam's personal bank-account.
  • Work in the vegetable gardens of TCDF: weeding, planting, harvestig and selling of produce to the restaurant of TCDF Eco-Logic.
  • Work on recycling: collecting and separating of products and garbage. Re-use and sales of these products is stimulated by the foundation. The profit of the sales is for the Special School.

SCHOOLSEASON OCTOBER 2014

Priam became 14 years old this year; he is still a lovely, friendly and very naughty boy, who loves to be with his friend and teachers in school.

Communication: he can use words, especially the names of people (father, mother and the names of the teachers) in a clear understandable way. He pronounces better, but still finds longer words hard.

Arithmetic: he is able to write English and Thai numbers, he uses his fingers instead of speaking and counts up to 10.

Writing/language: he is able to write letters using an example, he cannot write them by himself yet.

Daily life skills: he can dress himself now. Eat independently, cleans up after himself. Do the dishes. At home he helps his father in the garden.

Exercise/meditation: Nong Priam is a bit lazy and he does not like to exercise too much, but he loves the music and to make music. He does meditate, but it is sometimes it’s a bit too long for him.

Occupational training. At his house he has a fish garden and a recycle place. At TCDF he learns to take care of the fish, chicken, he works in the mushroom farm and the recycle place. He knows how to do everything by himself. You only have to tell him what to do next.

SCHOOLSEASON APRIL 2014

Nong Priam speaking skilss have improved in the last schoolyear.

He still only speaks in words, but he knows and says all the name of his friends and teachers. Pronunciation is still difficult , his tonque makes it hard for him to do that.

The reading and writing of the Thai and English alphabet has improved and his eye-hand coordination too.

He helps more in the school and at home with daily tasks and he is more friendly and helpfull. He helps some of the younger children during activities too.

His occupational training is aimed on recycling, fish and chicken. Next school season he will get trained on Fridays he will get trained on recycling the whole day, because that is what he will do with his family too.

SCHOOLSEASON APRIL 2013

Nong Priam is more quieter, not so anxious any more.
He learned to share his candy with his friends.
He loves to clean and is very dedicated to that.
Recycling garbage is one of his favorite activities.
His speaking skills have improved a lot and he is much better in articulating.
His concentration is improved, but he is still easily distracted.

At home the situation is good. Priam helps with daily tasks, like doing the dishes. He is allowed in the shop of his parents, but still likes to give everything away to his friends and customers. So, he is only allowed there when his mother is around.
